Appearance:

History: Wiki Link And I have compiled lore from items, characters and locations in game that give a timeline and account of Messmer and his life leading up to the canon point I'm taking him from if the wiki link is not enough here!
CR AU (Optional): n/a

Personality:
Loyalty: [ a strong feeling of support or allegiance. ]

Above all else, Messmer is loyal. To his mother most of all but also to a cause and his people. His loyalty was something of a double-edged blade and would eventually become the reason he ended up so alone. However, I feel it's one of his more positive traits. The demigod plays his role as his mother's attack dog and guardian very seriously, the saying Mother is God, in the eyes of a child represents Messmer and his relationship to his mother, Marika, perfectly. Marika's word was law, as far as he is concerned. Never questioning her and going above and beyond to please her even at the cost of his freedom. He was a good, loyal, son.

We see this clearly if we look at Messmer's role in the Crusades. Setting the world of Shadow ablaze, punishing the Hornsent and the impure who helped them subject his mother's people, the Shaman, to such horrendous acts all in the name of sainthood. His loyalty to his mother and her people comes with a fiery rage, one that leaves hardly a soul alive to speak badly of Queen Marika.

Messmer does as he is told without question and fear. Burning anyone and everything in his path, even after his mother leaves the Realm of Shadows, even as she never returns to embrace or reward him, his loyalty is steadfast. Messmer's loyalty extends to his soldiers, even those who eventually turn on him and abandon him, mourning the men he has to place in jail, remembering them not as traitors but as lost friends, even if it hurts he was still loyal to them, even if they did not share that feeling towards him.

Bitterness: [ anger and disappointment at being treated unfairly; resentment. ]

When Messmer finally accepts that he has been abandoned, that's when you see his bitterness. He was a good son, he did everything his mother asked of him, relentlessly so and yet Marika not only turned her back on him but the rest of her people and those fighting alongside Messmer in her name. When those of the Shadow realm are stripped of Grace, the morale among them drops, you see this on your way through Shadowkeep to fight Messmer, his soldiers sat around looking depressed and dejected unlike they are in the opening cutscene, where we see them fighting onward, gloriously in flame and blood.

By the time we encounter him, Messmer is sat in darkness, alone in his throneroom, seemingly brooding. His mother's statue is covered by curtains as if he can't bear to look at her. So upset by the fact Marika has not returned to see the wonderful job he has been doing in her absence. So upset that his other siblings are bathed in the golden grace of the Erdtree while he is forgotten. So upset that his name has been wiped from history due to the sin of his birth and the serpent that eats away at his flame from within.

To further insult Messmer, to rub salt into his bitterness, he is faced with us, a Tarnished one. He understands that a Tarnished is meant to become Elden Lord, something he will never be. However, his purpose was to ensure that `those stripped of the grace of gold shall all meet death.' Since Tarnished were stripped of the grace of gold, in his eyes, this means it is Messmer's purpose to kill them. So to come into his Keep and fight for his kindling and flame, Messmer is rightly frustrated and bitter towards the Tarnished. His boss fight dialogue confirms this:

β€œMongrel intruder. Thou'rt Tarnished, it seemeth. Mother, wouldst thou truly Lordship sanction, in one so bereft of light?
Yet...my purpose standeth unchanged. Those stripped of the Grace of Gold shall all meet death. In the embrace of Messmer's flame.”
-and
"I will not suffer... A lord devoid of light. O'Mother, forgive me.
Soon, Tarnished. Wilt thou be taken in the jaws... Of the Abysal Serpent, Shone of light."

In the end, as he dies, Messmer finally gives into the bitterness he feels towards his mother, the woman he had been loyal to for all of his life, by cursing her name with his last breath;

"Mother Marika, a curse upon thee."

Unyealding: [ not giving way to pressure; hard or solid. ]

Regardless of whether or not Marika was in the right or wrong, Messmer's loyalty, love and adoration for her makes him an unyielding weapon in her holy Crusade. Even though he despises his own fire (seen here in the item description, Messmer's Orb: β€œMessmer despised his own fire. Time and time again he hoped to rid himself of it, but ever did it burn.”) he uses it to fight his way through the Shadow Realms. Even when Marika leaves them, Messmer fights on, never breaking, never stopping, impaling those who would side with the Hornsent or take part in destroying the Shaman village his mother dwelled from.

Even throughout the desertion he faced with his soldiers and those he called friends, Messmer fought on, unyielding in his goal. Though he is sad his men have turned against him, he never once stops and questions if what he is doing is worth it, the pressure never gets to him, and his view remains soiled and firm, that what he is doing must be done.

Messmer is even unyielding when you fight him, going all out to stop a Tarnished from becoming Eldin Lord. He does this to the point of removing the seal of Grace his mother set in place of his eye, freeing the Abysal serpent and his full unwavering, devastating power. Even though it goes against his mother's wishes, even though that's the very reason he has been abandoned he feels so strongly that he must continue, that he apologises to his mother's statue before unleashing this cursed force to fight with.

"I will not suffer... A lord devoid of light. O'Mother, forgive me."

Zealous: [ showing great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or objective. ]

Messmer's enthusiasm in pursuit of his mother's Crusade is nothing if not a zealous act. The cleansing of those impure is something he takes seriously. His flame burns brighter and hotter than any other flame, strong enough to burn even the Erdtree, a thing to be viewed almost as an act of God. The fear he strikes in others is incomprehensible, he impales his victims on pikes and spears, leaving their still-burning remains as a warning to others. His fire much like his energy never stops burning, even long after he has set a place ablaze.

Without his mother's input, without Grace to guide him, Messmer holds steadfast in his belief that everything he is doing is for the greater good and a worthy cause, he will not rest until every Hornsent is dead. He manages to convince others too, encouraging them to join his cause, from lowborn farmers to even a Carian Princess. Like a cult or religious leader, Messmer is followed by those who feel a kinship to him and believe he is the one to lead them into better times. Cursed men and women join his ranks, only to become exiled by their own kind, yet Messmer's energy and enthusiasm for their Crusade is enough to keep them devout followers.

Even at the end, when others have lost their way, right up until the moments before he dies, Messmer still fights with vim and vigour in pursuit of his mother's wishes.

Powers and Abilities: Although Messmer is a boss in canon, I don't feel that he needs much if any nerfing. If anything we might wish to have in place that if he does unleash his Abysal Serpent, the damage it can cause is limited and that the fireballs it can breathe are no bigger than a car? Let me know your thoughts! I'll happily nerf him more to be playable in game!
